Rosalind Sedacca, CDC reveals the truth!
More divorces are filed in January, following the holiday season, than in any other month. That’s why January is recognized as International Child-Centered Divorce Month. This year is our 10th Anniversary commemoration.
I initiated ICCD Month as a Divorce & Parenting Coach, founder of the Child-Centered Divorce Network and author of How Do I Tell the Kids About the Divorce. Our goal is to educate parents about how to prevent negative consequences for children during and after separation or divorce. One of the most important questions I get asked by both clients and the media is:
Does Divorce Really Scar Children?
My answer is NO! It’s how parents approach the divorce that does the damage. Parental Conflict is behind most of the Negative Effects On Our children.
And that’s both good news and bad news.
The good news: Parents can be educated about how children are affected by divorce. They can then choose to co-parent cooperatively for the sake of their children. They can learn to avoid: badmouthing one another to the kids … fighting around the kids … blaming the other parent for the divorce … using the kids as spies between homes … sharing adult information with the children … trying to alienate the kids from loving their other parent … and other negative tactics post-divorce.
The bad news: Some parents – even when alerted to the emotional and psychological damage their children experience due to poor decision-making and vindictive actions – choose to continue this behavior despite its negative impact on their children.
It’s all about choice and awareness!
As a divorced parent myself, I know how challenging divorce can be on a family. I also know your children will thank you, when they are grown adults, if you take the high road and avoid the serious mistakes too often made by parents who put their own interests before the wellbeing of their children.
Fortunately there is help, support and fabulous resources available to every family coping with divorce. You’re not alone!
