Dare to Be Sober - PUBLISHED! “Dare to be Sober” is a collaborative book of recovering addicts’ stories of courage, strength and the determination to change. My chapter is “My Addiction Story: We Can Heal from Chronic Pain”. Here’s an excerpt from it: “Addiction feels like we have grabbed a tiger by the tail and cannot remember to let go. My name is Elizabeth. I am a recovering chronic pain sufferer and an addict in recovery – in discovery. My addictive behavior ranged all over the map, covering anything that helped me divert, distract, avoid, numb, push through, deny…whatever it took to not feel the moment I was experiencing. I had such a hard time accepting life the way I perceived it. I felt shame on so many levels. I felt powerless over the physical and emotional pain I felt. I felt spiritual pain because I felt that on some level my Higher Power was punishing me, even though I was doing the best I could to cope with my circumstances. I did not feel seen nor heard, certainly not valued for who I truly was, and I sure didn’t feel worthy. Why would I even want to participate in such a life? I escaped the best I could. In many ways, I could not escape. I did not see that ultimately, I had the key to the prison I was in…” Our mission with Dare to Be Sober is HOPE and the message that resounds loud and clear from each of these stories is that you can recover. This Spiritual Matter – the crux of it It is oft said, and rightly so: “There is only One. All the rest is illusion projected from our own thoughts.” I hear this and I get it --- however here is the crux for me, where the rubber meets the road: I still have to live in this world. We all have to make a living one way or another, maya or not. For me the challenge is how will I thread this path through with grace, gratitude, and remaining in touch with my ever connection to the One. It is a constant practice...I begin anew every morning, bowing and reminding Elizabeth that she is not in charge...the Infinite is the Doer of All. I always have the breath to go to during the day. Try telling a woman in labor with her first child that "There is only One. All the rest is illusion projected from our own thoughts" and see what happens. She will most likely agree with you that The One is totally in charge, but it is she that must make the choice to surrender to the process or not... When she dives into the breath for her guidance and allows the process, she wins the moment. She must begin again with the next breath, as do I. This is the journey, as I see it. Healing Our Great Dissolution: I hear this great ripping sound across our country. My friends overseas hear it, too. It is echoing all over the world. We are torn asunder with separation. It is as if the whole of humanity is suffering from this incipient disease of separation. My heart is breaking. But here’s the thing. That world out there points directly back to me. For it is in myself that the hard work lies. I must look to what it is in me that is torn asunder…the great ripping noise within me. As my friend and mentor, Nikki Myers, says, “I am a committee.” Nikki teaches about retrieving the lost self. We are, I am a splintered, fragmented soul at odds with itself. I must do the hard work of looking in all those places within me that I have been too terrified to look at, for fear of what I might find. Well enough. The time has come to come into cohesiveness. I have no clue what that will ultimately look like, but I have an idea of how it will feel. I will work towards healing those disparate parts of myself and you will hear the great thunderclap sound and massive sigh of relief as I move through the work of bringing these pieces together. Threading the Eye We arise and live inseparable from the Formless, the Unknowable, the Great Weaver, the Divine yet we forget this our deepest connection and find we are lost living in the eye of the needle walking in a fog hunting for something. The hunt takes on a life of its own and we hunt for the hunt. We are so lost we have even forgotten what it is that we have lost. We search for the way through and in the search itself we cannot thread our way through. We wonder, “Why is there so much angst and distress in our world?” We are battling against ourselves. Go within. Be in the still silence. We clear the way as we focus on, realize our divinity. We are the link between heaven and earth.
